Mission Statement

The mission of Greensboro College’s Department of Certification Development and Innovative Programs is to prepare individuals to advance and succeed in their careers and educational pursuits. Through innovative professional education, the program offers certification programs, test-preparation classes, developmental training, enrichment seminars, and other thought-provoking workshops. Additionally, interactive corporate training classes are available where Greensboro College’s experienced faculty and contract employees train personnel on-site or on Greensboro College’s historic and beautiful campus.

Purpose Statement

These innovative programs fulfill the professional and personal goals of traditional students, area high school students, community leaders and employees with local corporations, businesses and organizations as well as retirees. The Department of Certification and Innovative Programs follows industry trends, adheres to state and national certifying agencies’ high-standards and regulations, while meeting the required educational components necessary to qualify and prepare students to sit for certification examinations and attain professional designations.

Refresher Policy

The Office of Certification Development and Innovative Programs wants you to succeed; therefore, we are permitting our students who have attended a non-credit program a complimentary refresher of that course. What this means to you is, if you have attended a non-credit program and have not sat for your certification or test prep examination yet or you have taken the exam and are not pleased with your score, we invite you to take the class again, this time at no charge. This is our way of saying, “We want you to succeed, and thank you for choosing us!”

The Associate Professional in Human Resources aPHR™ Certification Program

If you are exploring or just beginning a professional career in human resources, Greensboro College’s Associate Professional in Human Resources™ (aPHR™) is the perfect program for you. Greensboro College has joined with the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI), the governing body of the SPHR and PHR exam, to offer this program. The aPHR™ is the only HR certification created for individuals who are just launching their professional HR careers. The aPHR™ credential will display foundational knowledge of HR practices and demonstrate to an employer that you have the skill set and qualifications for a promising HR career. Upon successful completion of this 30-hour program and the aPHR™ exam, the student will be eligible for this professional certification in the HR field.

The Professional in Human Resources and Senior Professional in Human Resources Certification Program

If you are presently working in human resources and meet specific eligibility requirements, Greensboro College’s Professional in Human Resources® (PHR®) or Senior Professional in Human Resources® (SPHR®) is the ideal program for you. Greensboro College has joined with the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI), the governing body of the SPHR & PHR exam, to offer this program.

PHR®/SPHR® Spring 2020 Schedule: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, March 21, April 4, April 18, May 2, May 16, May 30, and June 13.

Program Fee:  $1,288 (includes books and materials), or $1,388 for students who wish to have the online component added along with books and materials. Exam and application fees are additional and the responsibility of the student.

Paralegal Certification Education Program

The Paralegal Certification Education Prep Program is an accelerated course that allows students to attain their state paralegal certification. Students must have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree to be eligible to attend Greensboro College’s 19-week program. The course requires 190 contact hours and 300 overall hours. The in-class hours are reached by attending classes for four hours two nights a week, along with Saturday classes.

Spring 2020 Schedule: 6-10 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and five Saturdays, Feb. 4 – June 11.

Program Fee: $4,745 (installment payment plan) or $4,500 (paid in full). Includes books and materials.

Project Management Professional Certification Education Program

PMP Exam Preparation

Greensboro College has teamed up with experienced, credentialed PMP® instructors to offer the globally recognized Project Management Professional Certification (PMP®) and the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®). Earn a higher salary: According to PMI®, PMP credential holders can earn upward of US $20,000 more annually than non-credentialed jobholders. The PMP is the gold standard in project management certifications. The PMP or CAPM certification validates your skill set and capability to lead a team and projects, stay on budget and meet organization’s timeline goal. A projected 2.2 million new project management jobs created around the world each year through 2027, according to the Project Management Talent Gap Report.

Our in-class, 12-week program meets the 35 contact hours required for the exam as well as prepares students to sit for the PMP examination. Greensboro College has partnered with The CertWise® Learning System for PMP® Exam Preparation training text and materials.

SAT Test Preparation Program

Greensboro College’s SAT Test Preparation class has been created by two teachers whose combined experience spans more than 60 years. Both instructors have a passion for teaching and are dedicated to offering an effective learning environment for the students. Note: Only participants between 15-18 years old may attend our SAT Test Prep Program.

Spring 2020 SAT Schedule

  • 2-5 p.m. Sundays, Feb 16, 23 and Mar 1, 8. Cost: $399.

GRE Test Preparation Program

Greensboro College’s GRE Test Prep classes are taught by effective and experienced instructors over four consecutive weekends. The GRE Test Preparation program covers the math and verbal sections of the exam, while building students’ analytical and critical reasoning skills. Additionally, the program builds students’ confidence through test-taking tips and strategies. The instructor also offers personalized guidance and instruction for writing college and university essays.

Spring 2020 Schedule:  9 a.m.-12 noon Saturdays, March 21 and 28 and April 4 and 18.

Class Fee: $399; includes books and materials.

 

LSAT Test Preparation Program

The LSAT Preparation Program covers “real” questions from prior exams, offers students writing evaluations, introduces the puzzle and games sections of the exam, and provides students with test-taking strategies. The instructor took the LSAT, attended law school and has more than 30 years’ experience teaching.

Innovative Programs

Notary Public Workshop

Participants who attend this one-day Notary Public Workshop, and successfully pass the Notary Public examination, are eligible to apply for the North Carolina Notary Public Commission.

To attend this program, students must be 19​, have a high school diploma or GED, and have never been convicted of a felony. Participants must bring a current drivers license to class to be eligible to sit for the exam.

Upcoming Fall Schedule: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019.

Program Fee:  $139 (includes current Notary Public Guidebook).  Application and stamp fees are additional and the responsibility of the student.

 

Incarnational Preaching: Embodying the Word Proclaimed

This day-long preaching and leadership training will help preachers develop and hone their homiletic skills to embody the exegetical process and more effectively proclaim the gospel.   Participants should come in comfortable clothing and be prepared to stand and/or move.

This workshop will also prepare preachers to be ready to preach a Christmas sermon and sermons throughout the Christmas season.

Late Fall 2019 Schedule

  • 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10. Cost $40 for preachers from the Western N.C. Conference of the United Methodist Church and $90 for all other participants (instruction, materials and lunch included).

  • Engage in the practice of Alexander Technique, theatrical discipline and theory, and embodied exegetical work.
  • Learn from Perry Morgan, associate professor of theatre and a professional actor and director.
  • Enjoy a comfortable teaching environment led by Ashley Hyers, assistant professor of theatre and dance and Certified Alexander Technique Instructor.
  • Set effective and action-oriented goals with instruction by Robert Brewer, assistant professor of religion, homiletician, and Certified Professional Coach.
  • Leave with resources to help with exegetical work and materials that will help order services and sermons for the Christmas season and beyond.

Foundations in Personal Finance: Winning With Money

The Foundations in Personal Finance workshop is for those who want to understand how money works, so they can start winning with money.  This material empowers participants to be able to control their money, eliminate debt, and gain momentum in achieving their financial goals.  It’s that course that addresses the: “Hey, why didn’t they teach us that in school?” material. Learn from an experienced Money Coach whose passion is teaching others how to win with money. She will take you step-by-step through Dave Ramsey’s proven method in Personal Finance.

This workshop is designed for anyone who:

  • Feels anxious about money issues and wants to find a personal starting point
  • Experiences stress in relationships because of money
  • Wants to gain control of money
  • Wants to learn some of the basics of saving and investing
  • Knows what a budget is but would like to really learn how to use one to get results
  • Has debt and wants a game plan to win with money
  • Wants to gain a skill that you will use the rest of your life.

Workshop: The Foundations of Universal Design for Learning in Higher Education

The Foundations of Universal Design for Learning in Higher Education workshop is for those who want to understand Universal Design for Learning at a basic level and be empowered to take this information back to your institutions to disseminate this new pedagogy and see increases in student success.  This course addresses such questions as:

  • Why is UDL important in our 21st century education systems?
  • How do we use best practices when teaching our neurodiverse 21st-century college students in the classroom?
  • How can we implement this pedagogy school wide?

Learn from an experienced educator, Georgie Bogdan, M.A. Georgie is Greensboro College’s Director of Academic Accessibility, a faculty member, and a presenter of UDL certified by the Center for Applied Science & Technology (CAST). She has more than 35 years of accessibility work and teaching experience at UNC Greensboro, Wake Forest University, Guilford College and Greensboro College.

This workshop is designed for faculty, staff and administrators in higher education who want to:

  • Learn the neuroscience behind teaching to diverse learners with and without disabilities.
  • Learn the basics of Universal Design for Learning to support teaching to our nuerodiverse 21st-century students.
  • Be enlightened about the befits of implementing UDL in the classroom and beyond
  • Increase admission and retention at your institution by implementing UDL across the campus

Meeting times: TBA. This workshop is 10 hours of contact hours and provides a Certificate of Completion from Greensboro College and CAST.

Class Fee: $299 (Includes 10 hours of instruction, a workbook to take home and access to online resources)
