Your parent may be interested in borrowing from the Federal Direct PLUS Loan for Parents program. Unlike private loans, the PLUS Loan does have an origination fee. If your parent is approved, he or she may use the loan to cover the remaining balance. As the borrower, your parent will be responsible for repaying the loan. If your parent is not approved, you may be eligible to borrow additional Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan funds.
For additional information about the PLUS Loan, or to apply, visit StudentAid.gov. The applying parent will need to sign in using his or her FSA ID and password.
If you need help completing the application, please refer to our Guide to the Parent PLUS Loan. You can find step-by-step instructions that will walk you through the application starting on page 3.
Private loans can help students who need additional funds to pay their balance. In most cases, the student will need a creditworthy co-signer. Many of our students use Citizens One, College Foundation (NC Assist Loan), PNC, Sallie Mae, or Wells Fargo. All terms and conditions are set by the bank or lending institution and you can find applications for these loans online. If you are unsure about which lender is right for you, our office offers a loan comparison tool to help you compare lenders.
