GENERAL

  • Eleanor Oakley Trigg ’56, Washington, shared after reading about classmates in the recent Points of Pride magazine, that although she attended for only two years, it could be said she did get her “B.S” when she married Bob Sills. They were together for 46 years prior to his death in 2000, and shared 6 children. With family scattered throughout the country, she was thrilled to applaud her grandson, Sean Daugherty, when he received his PhD degree. In 2005, she married J. Tracy Tripp Jr, the father of 7 children with his first wife. New acquaintances would ask if they were catholic upon hearing Eleanor and Tracy had 13 children. “No. Just passionate Protestants!” She closed with, “I can’t believe I’m 89! But I am content!”
  • Kenny Barnwell ’80, Edneyville, was named the 2023 Apple Grower of the Year by the American Fruit Grower Organization.

  • Holly Jones Ferreira ’14, Vero Beach, FL, is a Fish and Wildlife Biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Vero Beach. On June 1st, she was presented with the Service’s Southeast Region Regional Director’s Honor Award for her involvement with the Florida Outreach and Diversity Recruitment team. This honor award is given to the Service’s volunteers, partners, and employees who have contributed to the accomplishments of the Service’s mission and vision in the Southeast Region through extraordinary performance in a job or volunteer assignment in which they have demonstrated exceptional innovation or ability. Nominations are evaluated through the lens of the regional vision: “Together we will connect lands and waters to sustain, fish, wildlife and plants by being visionary leaders, bold innovators and trusted partners, working with and for people.”

One new friend, in particular, is Barbara’s backdoor neighbor, Mary Hannah Finch Taft, who is the granddaughter of GC Hannah Brown Finch Chapel namesake. Mary Hannah’s grandmother graduated from GFC in 1885 following her sister, Crissie Brown Clark Class of 1861, for whom a scholarship is named.

  • Kenny Barnwell ’80, Hendersonville, was recognized as the top pick for the East Region by the American Fruit Grower Magazine, which published its annual listing of Apple Growers of the Year, He’s a fifth-generation apple grower, and owner of Kenny Barnwell Orchards. He took over the family orchard in 1989 and provides wholesale apples to local markets, as well as Gerber for baby food and Peterson Farms, who make the apple slices for McDonald’s.

  • GT Randall ’93, Calabash, retired from Brunswick Community College on August 31, 2022, as the Senior Director of Workforce Development. He was promoted to Master Sergeant in the United States Army Reserve on June 1, 2022, and celebrated 31 years in the reserves on August 25, 2022.

  • Donna Allard Jackson ’03, The Villages, FL and her husband have recently moved to The Villages, Florida. They had been living in Iowa, then at the suggestion of a high school friend who lives there, visited The Villages and decided to move. She says this first summer in Florida hasn’t been any hotter than what they were used to in Iowa and, previously, Greensboro (highs in the 90s), but she really looks forward to experiencing the first winter in Florida. Donna graduated from GC as an adult student and has wonderful memories of her time here. She was able to work while earning her degree which worked very well for her.

  • Eddie Huss ’79, Columbia, SC, currently serves as the Minister of Music at the Shandon United Methodist Church in Columbia, South Carolina, and as an ordained Deacon in the South Carolina Conference. As a pianist, he has performed concerts throughout the Carolinas with his duo piano partner, Annette Matthews. While at Greensboro College, (1975-1979), he had the unique opportunity to study piano with the brilliant pianist, David Pinnix. He also studied music with professors, Anne Woodward Lee, Harold Andrews, E.L. Williams, Don, and Jo Hansen. In 1975, He was awarded the Theodore Presser Music Scholarship at Greensboro College. He is grateful for his undergraduate education at Greensboro College and the wonderful friendships he made during his four years as a college student.
  • Paula Webster Graham ’82, Tobaccoville, retired after 38 years as an electron microscopy technologist.
  • Tonya Bennett James ’85, Winston-Salem, retired on January 1, 2021, after 32 1/2 years of teaching art.
