Civic Leadership Program

“Be the reason.”

As the world progresses, it is extremely crucial for citizens of today to uphold the values that make our society a strong democracy. The Civic Leadership Program aims to help with that by creating strong and capable civic-minded leaders that are ready to make a powerful impact on society.

Greensboro College’s Civic Leadership Program is a highly exclusive experiential program for qualifying students that show major interest in involving themselves in an active civic life and demonstrate high potential in being a civic leader on campus. Students will develop their leadership skills and civic identity through discussion-based workshops and lectures, hands-on civic engagement, and by receiving the opportunity to create and lead their own personal civic project that addresses a specific problem and issue that the student is passionate about.

From interpersonal skills such as effective communication and conflict resolutions to managing team dynamics and project development skills – being a part of the Civic Leadership Program will teach a student important skills that will help them be successful in their college career and any future endeavors.

Furthermore, the hands-on experience that a student will receive as part of the Civic Leadership Program will develop the student’s skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making. In addition, the student will gain a much more meaningful perspective regarding the importance of being civically engaged.

Lastly, perhaps the most important part of the Civic Leadership Program is being able to provide a platform for students to explore their civic identity and be able to hone their civic leader potential with ample support and zero pressure.

Mission of the Civic Leadership Program:

  1. Create and empower civic leaders amongst the student population.
    • Having a clear and established platform that enables students to freely grow as a leader and provides them with a platform to engage in any project that they are passionate about will effectively create and empower civic leaders.
  2. Cultivate a civically engaged and educated student community.
    • An indirect effect of the civic leadership program is its impact on the overall student community. Hands-on engagement with the student population is crucial in the creation of student civic leaders. As a result, though the civic leadership program only works with a specific and limited number of students, it allows the student community to also grow civically and become more civically engaged.
  3. Address specific civic issues on campus.
    • A major component of the civic leadership program is for students to be able to lead an initiative revolving around a civic issue they are passionate about. By allowing students to freely address any specific civic issue they wish, both the overall campus civic life and specific civic-related problems are improved upon.

“I loved the GC Honors program and Greensboro College. I felt safe and a sense of genuine belonging at the college. I worked closely with my thesis advisor and professors who helped inspire me to define my path and passion of interest. That path has led me to my doctoral studies in Engineering Mechanics.”
