Greensboro College Community Mourns the Loss of Sadie Wolfe Byerly ’42

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College is mourning the death of Sadie Wolfe Byerly ’42, who passed away Feb. 27 at her Charlotte home. She was 96.

Byerly received her B.A. in Home Economics in 1942. While an undergraduate, she served as student body president and was a member of the Art Club, the German Club, the GC Sons and Daughters Club, the Home Economics Club, the Honor Society, and the Irving Literary Society. She was named to Who’s Who in American Colleges & Universities.

As an alumna, she served on the Alumni Board (and was its president from 1955 to 1957) and as a member of the Board of Trustees from 1972 to 1993 and 1995 to 2002. She won the college’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1996. She was a lifetime member of the Greensboro College Society, the college’s leadership-giving organization, and founded two scholarships at the college. And she was a member and past president of the Charlotte alumni chapter.

In the community, she was heavily involved in Charlotte’s Providence United Methodist Church and volunteered with the Red Cross, the Charlotte Charity League, the Travelers Aid Society, Goodwill Industries and Bethlehem Center.
