MAT TESL

Greensboro College offers the Licensure Plus Master of Arts in Teaching for Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). The program prepares teachers to work with K-12 students for whom English is a second language.

The Licensure Plus MAT is divided into two steps. Step One leads to the N.C. Standard Professional 1 license. Students may stop at Step One or complete Step Two for only 15 more hours of coursework and earn the “M” license and Master of Arts in Teaching degree in TESL.

Students who have completed coursework in another GC TESOL program maybe be able to apply their credits toward licensure, but additional coursework and requirements must be met.

Coursework required for the Licensure Plus MAT in TESL can be found here.

“What stood out to me during my time at GC is how diverse the faculty is and accessible they made themselves to students. Seems like whenever I had a question, the answer arrived in moments. It’s clear that the program’s instructors care deeply about their students and model what it means to be a responsive and flexible teacher.”

“I loved the GC Honors program and Greensboro College. I felt safe and a sense of genuine belonging at the college. I worked closely with my thesis advisor and professors who helped inspire me to define my path and passion of interest. That path has led me to complete my doctoral studies in Engineering Mechanics.”

- Dr. Josh Fitzgerald, Class of ’19, Mathematics Major

Dr. Josh Fitzgerald earned his master's from Virginia Tech University (studied astrodynamics) as well as earning an Engineering Mechanics Ph.D. He joined the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX as an Advanced Mission Design Engineer, optimizing trajectories for the Artemis II and III missions to return humans to the moon.
