Licensure Plus Master of Education in Special Education General Curriculum or Special Education Adapted Curriculum

The Licensure Plus M.Ed. Program in Elementary Education is designed for individuals who have earned a bachelor’s degree, who do not have a teaching license, and who are seeking an initial license. The Licensure Plus Programs are two-step programs. The first step of Licensure Plus M.Ed. leads to the initial license. The second step of Licensure Plus M.Ed. leads to the M.Ed. and master’s licensure.

Admission Requirements

  • Official transcripts from all accredited institutions attended
  • 3.0 cumulative grade-point average
  • Submission of two letters of recommendation
  • Submission of an essay

Step One

The Licensure Plus Step One program in Special Education General Curriculum or Special Education Adapted Curriculum requires the successful completion of a minimum of 40 hours of coursework, including three field components. Candidates who are not employed as teachers are also required to complete Student Teaching for Post-Baccalaureate Candidates and Student Teaching Seminar. Candidates who are employed as teachers will complete a Clinical Practicum and Clinical Practicum Seminar. Course requirements are listed below.

Step Two

Candidates who successfully complete Step One, the licensure program, in special education general curriculum or special education adapted curriculum and who intend to continue to Step Two, must apply for admission into Step Two, the Licensure Plus M.Ed. Program and be readmitted into the Teacher Education Program. Candidates must have completed all requirements of the “Licensure” Program with a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and must submit the following admission documents:

  • Copy of valid, active initial license
  • Step 2 Application (including a recommendation from a “Licensure” Program faculty member)

Once admitted, candidates may earn a Master of Education degree in Special Education General Curriculum or Special Education Adapted Curriculum by completing an additional 21 hours of professional studies, and specialty studies coursework.
