Honors Program Semester Abroad

Members of the Honors program have the opportunity to spend an immersive semester (typically during their sophomore year) living and studying at a 13th century castle in the Italian alps. This one-of-a-kind, once in a lifetime experience includes living in a converted farmhouse on the property, eating meals and taking classes in the castle, assisting in the vineyard or apple orchard one day each week, as well as traveling throughout the region and taking class trips to cities like Florence, Venice, Munich, or Rome.

Semester Abroad Details

The Brunnenburg program combines features of the best study abroad programs:

  • The program is available to a limited number of students (10-12) each year.
  • A professor (or professors) from Greensboro College accompany the group and also teach one or more of the classes.
  • Students are not simply enrolling at an international university, but instead living with a host family (the deRachelwiltz family that own and operate the castle and farm/museum); members of the family also teach some of the courses, such as Environmental Philosophy, Myth & AgroArchaeology, and Saints & Heroes.
  • Courses often include trips with a local hiking guide (the region features some of the most beautiful hikes in the world), as well as visits to local museums, farms and botanical gardens.

Dr. Josh Fitzgerald earned his master's from Virginia Tech University (studied astrodynamics) as well as earning an Engineering Mechanics Ph.D. He joined the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX as an Advanced Mission Design Engineer, optimizing trajectories for the Artemis II and III missions to return humans to the moon.
