Greensboro College Senior Wins Graduate Fellowship from Academic Honor Society (5/5/2017)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sofia Sedergren, a graduating Greensboro College senior from Bromma, Sweden, has received a $4,000 fellowship for graduate study.

The Robert W. Sledge Fellowship for 2017-2018 came from the national academic honor society Alpha Chi, of which she is a member. Sedergren is a student in the college’s George Center for Honors Studies.

The grant could be critical for her. As a foreign national, she is not eligible for federal financial aid for graduate study. A history/political science major and philosophy and ethics minor, she has been accepted into a master’s-degree program in political theory at the City University of New York for the fall.

The Sledge Fellowship is named for Dr. Robert Sledge, who served on Alpha Chi’s National Council for 24 years, 1973-87 and 1989-99. He served 12 of those years as president. He also is the author of the history of Alpha Chi’s first 75 years.

Alpha Chi is Greensboro College’s cross-disciplinary national honor society. It was introduced to the campus in 1978 by Dr. Howard Wilkinson, the 14th president of the college. Alpha Chi is open to seniors who rank in the top 10 percent of their class and juniors who rank in the top 5 percent of their class.

The George Center for Honors Studies at Greensboro College offers opportunities for students to participate in team-taught interdisciplinary honors seminars, independent projects and senior research projects. Approximately 50 students participate in the George Honors Program each year.

“I loved the GC Honors program and Greensboro College. I felt safe and a sense of genuine belonging at the college. I worked closely with my thesis advisor and professors who helped inspire me to define my path and passion of interest. That path has led me to my doctoral studies in Engineering Mechanics.”
