Greensboro College Receives Six-Figure Gift to Air-Condition Hanes Gymnasium

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College’s James G. Hanes Gymnasium is being air-conditioned, thanks to a six-figure gift from a graduate’s parents.

The donors will be recognized and honored at a later date.

During the semester break, the college moved its Athletic Training Center into the former swimming-pool space in Hanes Gym, which the college renovated in 2017. Over time, chlorine and moisture had contributed to steel deterioration in the north end of Hanes.

The college opted to fill in the pool and renovate the structure, which now houses athletic training facilities with room for eventual locker rooms. The college’s swim program practices and competes in the college’s Royce and Jane Reynolds Family Life Center pool, two blocks west of main campus.

The new HVAC system for Hanes provides climate control for the Athletic Training facility as well as the large gymnasium, home to the volleyball team and the men’s and women’s basketball teams. The building was built in the early 1960s and named then for trustee James G. Hanes.

The gift will be recognized as part of the college’s “GC2020: Uniquely Focused” capital campaign. The campaign, which began in 2015, sought to raise $15 million by June 30, 2020, to address student financial assistance, faculty/staff compensation and professional development, academic programs, and facilities updates.

The campaign had exceeded its original goal by June 30, 2018, but it is continuing through fiscal year 2020 to address some remaining needs.

“I loved the GC Honors program and Greensboro College. I felt safe and a sense of genuine belonging at the college. I worked closely with my thesis advisor and professors who helped inspire me to define my path and passion of interest. That path has led me to my doctoral studies in Engineering Mechanics.”
