Greensboro College Promotes Long-Time Coach and Faculty Member Jean Lojko in Surprise Announcement

GREENSBORO, N.C. – In a surprise announcement during Commencement exercises today, Greensboro College President Lawrence D. Czarda, Ph.D., said that effective immediately, the college is promoting G. Jean Lojko, associate professor of exercise and sport studies, to full professor.

In his citation, Czarda called Lojko “an exceptional member of our faculty” and noted that she had been “a presence on the GC campus for the majority of her life.”

Lojko, whose mother, Anne, was a staff member at the college before retiring in 1989, has served for 35 years as a member of the college’s faculty and staff. Prior to joining the college full-time, she and her siblings worked summer jobs here.

In addition to her faculty position, she was the longtime coach of the volleyball team, amassing more than 600 career wins – more than any other volleyball coach and, it is believed, the most wins of any GC coach in any sport.

She also has coached basketball and tennis and has served as athletic director.

She has been inducted into the Greensboro College Athletics Hall of Fame, the Guilford County Athletic Hall of Fame, and the USA South Conference Hall of Fame.

Lojko had not sought the promotion, but it had been recommended by the Academic Deans Council; Rich Mayes, dean of the faculty; chief academic officer Paul Leslie; President Czarda; and the academic affairs committee of the Board of Trustees. On Friday, the full board unanimously approved the promotion.

Lojko holds a B.S. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and an M.A. from Appalachian State University. She joined the college full-time in 1981.

Greensboro College provides a liberal arts education grounded in the traditions of the United Methodist Church and fosters the intellectual, social, and, spiritual development of all students while supporting their individual needs.

Founded in 1838 and located in downtown Greensboro, the college enrolls about 1,000 students from 29 states and territories, the District of Columbia, and seven foreign countries in its undergraduate liberal-arts program and four master’s degree programs. In addition to rigorous academics and a well-supported Honors program, the school features an 18-sport NCAA Division III athletic program and dozens of service and recreational opportunities.

“I loved the GC Honors program and Greensboro College. I felt safe and a sense of genuine belonging at the college. I worked closely with my thesis advisor and professors who helped inspire me to define my path and passion of interest. That path has led me to my doctoral studies in Engineering Mechanics.”
