Greensboro College Presents Vocal Recital by Faculty Member Sarah Taylor March 17

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Mezzo-soprano Sarah Taylor, an adjunct instructor of music at Greensboro College, will give a vocal recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 17, in Hannah Brown Finch Memorial Chapel on campus.

Admission is free, and the public is invited. Free parking is available behind the college’s Admissions Welcome Center at the corner of West Market Street and College Place.

Taylor will be accompanied by organist Raymond Hawkins and pianist Radha Upton in a program of French music for voice and organ, including songs by Gabriel Fauré and Henri Duparc, organ works by Charles-Marie Widor and Louis Vierne, and featuring “Les Angélus,” a work for organ and voice, by Vierne.

Taylor’s operatic credits include the title role in “Carmen” (CCM Summer Opera), Cherubino in “Le Nozze di Figaro,” The Mother in “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” and Ruth in “The Pirates of Penzance (Greensboro Light Opera).”

Also a passionate singer of oratorio, Taylor has appeared as a guest artist with the Durham Symphony Orchestra, Choral Society of Durham, Greensboro Oratorio Society, Concert Singers of Cary, Guilford College Choir, and Roanoke College Choir.

For her work in art song and oratorio, she received third place nationally in the American Prize in 2016.

She holds a B.M. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an M.M. and D.M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Raymond Hawkins is a senior in the undergraduate organ performance program at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Through his studies and an active career in church music and nationwide concertizing, he has developed an acute interest in the music of French composer Louis Vierne and the art of improvisation.

His invited recital performances include the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco and Adolphus Busch Hall at Harvard University in Boston. Aside from his musical studies, Raymond has a particular fascination with foreign languages and has devoted countless hours to studying French and German.

German pianist Radha Upton is both an avid collaborative pianist and a passionate piano teacher. After completing degrees in piano pedagogy, piano performance, and piano chamber music in Germany, she earned her D.M.A. in Collaborative Piano at UNC Greensboro in 2011.

She now works privately as a vocal coach and German-language coach, and she also maintains a private piano studio. In addition, Upton is the accompanist for the Children’s Choirs at First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro.

“I loved the GC Honors program and Greensboro College. I felt safe and a sense of genuine belonging at the college. I worked closely with my thesis advisor and professors who helped inspire me to define my path and passion of interest. That path has led me to my doctoral studies in Engineering Mechanics.”
