GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College has awarded the Harold H. Hutson Award, presented annually to the outstanding traditional graduating senior, to Kelvina Dorcas Dei-Tumi.

The award, named after the college’s 11th president, the Rev. Dr. Harold H. Hutson, who served from 1952 to 1964, recognizes a student selected by the faculty who:

  • Has developed a sense of direction.
  • Has a high degree of confidence to be used in approaching his or her career objectives.
  • Has a sense of values in that he or she can take each new experience and judge it in terms of things he or she feels important.
  • Has a sense of scholarship, working not for grades alone but for the satisfaction of scholarly accomplishment
  • Has a wide range of interests including music, art, athletics, and reading.
  • Has shown a definite degree of maturation in his or her years at Greensboro College.

Dei-Tumi, a native of Ghana who now lives in Ludington, Mich., was cited not only for academic excellence – she received her B.S. in accounting summa cum laude (with highest honors) today – but also for her wide-ranging campus involvement. Her citation said in part, “She has made excellent use of all the many opportunities that Greensboro College has afforded her.”

She has been involved in the gospel choir, gospel band and Bible-study groups. She has served as a student ambassador, leading prospective students on tours of the campus. She has been a peer tutor, a residence advisor, and a member of the Dean of the Business School’s Council, the color guard, the Student Government Association, and an honorary member of the Pride of the Pride group. She also has served as a phoneathon caller.

Greensboro College provides a liberal arts education grounded in the traditions of the United Methodist Church and fosters the intellectual, social, and, spiritual development of all students while supporting their individual needs.

Founded in 1838 and located in downtown Greensboro, the college enrolls about 1,000 students from 29 states and territories, the District of Columbia, and seven foreign countries in its undergraduate liberal-arts program and four master’s degree programs. In addition to rigorous academics and a well-supported Honors program, the school features an 18-sport NCAA Division III athletic program and dozens of service and recreational opportunities.

“I loved the GC Honors program and Greensboro College. I felt safe and a sense of genuine belonging at the college. I worked closely with my thesis advisor and professors who helped inspire me to define my path and passion of interest. That path has led me to my doctoral studies in Engineering Mechanics.”
