17th Annual Greensboro College Stream Walk Clears Debris from Stream, Finds Stream in Good Shape

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College faculty, staff and students pulled 22 bags of debris from the water and banks of College Branch, the stream that runs along the campus’s eastern edge, during the 17th Annual Spring Stream Walk held April 29.

The volunteers also gathered a 5-gallon bucket full of pieces of metal, a sofa cushion, a desk chair, and a knapsack.

Calhoun Bond, professor of biology at Greensboro College and the event’s organizer, said that in its channel the stream looked clear, and he spotted multiple minnows. Some pools had lots of pollen and tiny seeds on the surface, likely from recent mowing of nearby green space.

Greensboro College “adopted” College Branch in 2003 in cooperation with the city of Greensboro’s Water Resources Department.

Each spring, the college community, under Bond’s direction, walks the stream along the college’s property, cleaning up trash and recording the general condition of the water, stream bed and banks. The event also is sponsored by Beta Beta Beta, the biology honor society.

“I loved the GC Honors program and Greensboro College. I felt safe and a sense of genuine belonging at the college. I worked closely with my thesis advisor and professors who helped inspire me to define my path and passion of interest. That path has led me to my doctoral studies in Engineering Mechanics.”
