Altan Atamer, Ph.D.

Dr. Atamer is an assistant professor of political science and chair of the Department of Political Science and Global Affairs.

He received his BA in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts at Boston, and his MA and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Connecticut. Primarily a political theorist, his research interests include critical theory, ideologies, Middle East, Ottoman, and Turkish history, politics, and thought, nationalism, postcolonialism and decolonialism, the politics of class, ethnicity, gender, identity, race, and religion, revolution, war, and critical international relations. He has published articles in various peer-reviewed journals and is currently working on publishing a book manuscript that offers a postcolonial conception of Kemalism, the official ideology of the Turkish Republic.

Dr. Atamer designs his courses to expose students to global thinkers and ideas and to address historical and ongoing events. His courses encourage critical thinking and challenging taken for granted narratives.

Outside of his scholarly activity, Dr. Atamer enjoys spending time with his wife and playing with his daughter.
