Dr. Yul Eum Sim was born in Seoul, South Korea, and graduated Dongguk University with B.A. in philosophy and B.S. in Life Science. She worked in a virology lab as an undergraduate student studying KSHV, which ended up being published 8 years later, where she found the passion in studying viruses. She received her PhD in University of Missouri-Columbia studying retroviruses, and worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis TN, and then in the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta GA. Dr. Sim mentored many research students from high school students to graduate students, and published several peer reviewed articles on the field. During the years of research, she always wanted to teach students in classrooms or labs, so she joined High Point University as a postdoctoral instructor. After 2 years of teaching experience, she moved to Greensboro College as an assistant professor in 2024.

While Dr. Sim is a professor dedicated to teach and research, she is also a mother of 2 young children, and a devoted wife. If she has any free time after spending time with her family, she also likes to read or write novels as a hobby.

“I loved the GC Honors program and Greensboro College. I felt safe and a sense of genuine belonging at the college. I worked closely with my thesis advisor and professors who helped inspire me to define my path and passion of interest. That path has led me to my doctoral studies in Engineering Mechanics.”

Joshua currently studies astrodynamics at Virginia Tech University and is an Engineering Mechanics Ph.D. Candidate.
