Greensboro College Staff Member Honored by State Organization for Support of Students with Disabilities (4/6/2017)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Lisa Alley ’93, Greensboro College’s director of academic support, has been honored by the North Carolina Association of Higher Education and Disabilities.

Alley received the association’s Laura Thomas Award, established by the association’s executive board in 1996 in memory of Laura L. D. Thomas, the Director of Disability Services at UNC-Chapel Hill for 17 years and one of the pioneers in disability services in the state of North Carolina.

The award recognizes an outstanding individual outside the field of disability services – someone who has demonstrated exemplary support of disability services within an academic setting or community, yet who is not a disability service provider.

The association says the winner may be “someone who has made our lives easier, and who may not realize the value of what he/she does.”

Alley holds a B.S. from Greensboro College and joined the staff in 1995. She was promoted to her current position in 2009. She also has been active for many years in the college alumni association, serving on the alumni board and currently chairing its awards committee.

In 2016, she received the Nannie Lee Smith Exemplary Service Medal, the college’s highest honor, for her extended service to the college and its students.

Greensboro College provides a liberal arts education grounded in the traditions of the United Methodist Church and fosters the intellectual, social, and, spiritual development of all students while supporting their individual needs.

Founded in 1838 and located in downtown Greensboro, the college enrolls about 1,000 students from 29 states and territories, the District of Columbia, and seven foreign countries in its undergraduate liberal-arts program and four master’s degree programs. In addition to rigorous academics and a well-supported Honors program, the school features an 18-sport NCAA Division III athletic program and dozens of service and recreational opportunities.

“I loved the GC Honors program and Greensboro College. I felt safe and a sense of genuine belonging at the college. I worked closely with my thesis advisor and professors who helped inspire me to define my path and passion of interest. That path has led me to my doctoral studies in Engineering Mechanics.”
