Greensboro College Names Paul Freeman Its Outstanding Traditional Graduating Senior

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College has named Paul Freeman the winner of the Harold H. Hutson Award, the college’s highest award attainable by a traditional undergraduate student.

Freeman, a history major from Winston-Salem, N.C., received the award and his B.A. degree today at Commencement.

Freeman was cited for his campus involvement – senior class treasurer, founding president of the Pride of the Pride Alliance, a member of the history club, and a student marshal.

He also was cited for academic achievement; he was inducted into the Phi Alpha Theta national honor society in history and received the 2017 Marvin L. Skaggs History Award.

He also has been invited to participate in an international seminar on Christian, Jewish, and Muslim dialogue at Bar-Illan University in Israel this summer. 

In the community, he has served his church as president of its board and also serves as president of the Archive Committee for the Walkertown Historical Society.

The Hutson Award is named after Greensboro College’s 11th president, who served from 1952 to 1964.

The recipient of the award must demonstrate:

  • a developed sense of life direction,
  • a high degree of confidence in approaching career objectives,
  • a sense of values in that she or he takes new experiences and judges them in terms of ethical literacy,
  • a sense of scholarship, working not for grades alone, but for the satisfaction of scholarly accomplishment,
  • a range of interests including music, art, athletics, and literature, and
  • a clear degree of maturation in her or his undergraduate years at Greensboro College.

The recipient is selected yearly by the full-time faculty from among all nominees.

Founded in 1838 and located in downtown Greensboro, the college enrolls about 1,000 students from 29 states and territories, the District of Columbia, and seven foreign countries in its undergraduate liberal-arts program and four master’s degree programs. In addition to rigorous academics and a well-supported Honors program, the school features an 18-sport NCAA Division III athletic program and dozens of service and recreational opportunities.
