Greensboro College Honors Employees for Service, Longevity (5/5/2017)

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College has honored two employees with service awards and also recognized three dozen employees for milestones in their service to the college.

The Ann P. Lojko Distinguished Staff Award was given to Jenna Ryan in the category of employees who have worked for the college for less than five years and to the Rev. Dr. Robert Brewer in the category of employees who have worked for the college for more than five years.

Ryan is the director of first-year experience and seminar and an adjunct instructor of education. In that role, she oversees orientation for new students and the Greensboro College Seminar (formerly the First Year Seminar) for new students. The seminar is designed to instill in new students information literacy and critical thinking in ethics and values.

Ryan holds a B.A. in psychology with a minor in African American Studies and an M.Ed. in Student Personnel Administration in Higher Education, both from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She joined the staff in 2013.

Brewer is assistant professor of religion and the college chaplain. In addition to leading worship services, he also oversees much of the service work carried out by students.

He holds a B.S. from Appalachian State University, an M.Div. from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, and a Th.D. from the University of Toronto. He joined the college in 2005.

Lojko Award winners are nominated and voted on by their peers and receive plaques and cash awards.

The annual awards have been endowed by Jean Lojko, associate professor of physical education and faculty marshal. They are named for her mother, the late Ann P. Lojko, who retired from the college staff in 1989, in honor of the elder Lojko’s 24 years of service and a family legacy of employment at Greensboro College — Jean Lojko, her sister and her two brothers all worked at summer jobs at the college while they were in high school and college.

The awards were established in 2010 to recognize employees “who demonstrate an excellence in their work, routinely go above and beyond that which might be considered normal, work to find ways to improve the institution, and demonstrate dedicated service to students, the institution, the larger community or the church.”

The Student Advocate Award was given to Sarah Webber, a physician assistant with Pomona Urgent Care in Greensboro who works under contract in the college’s Student Health Center.

The award is presented annually by the college’s Student Development staff to the person who advocates most strongly and effectively on behalf of students.

“I loved the GC Honors program and Greensboro College. I felt safe and a sense of genuine belonging at the college. I worked closely with my thesis advisor and professors who helped inspire me to define my path and passion of interest. That path has led me to my doctoral studies in Engineering Mechanics.”
