Dr. McKinney currently coordinates the music education program, directs the opera workshop, and teaches courses in middle/secondary music pedagogy, vocal pedagogy, conducting, brass methods, and music theory. As a band director, she initiated and developed the first band, choral, and keyboard programs at Rockingham County Senior High School. As a music educator, singer and trumpet player, she has enjoyed an eclectic career performing as a recitalist, in orchestras, playing in jazz and rock bands and in bands opening for singers such as Sam and Dave, Barbara Eden, and Chubby Checker, and performing in and directing musicals and collegiate opera productions. She moved to collegiate teaching to prepare young musicians for creative and life-fulfilling work in music education. At Greensboro College, she has chaired all NCATE/NCSDPI and NASM Self Studies for the Music Department since 1990 and serves on the Faculty Affairs Committee. She served 18 years as adviser to the NCMEA collegiate section and continues as adviser to the Greensboro College CNAfME Chapter. Awards include the Most Outstanding Educator Award in 1982 (Rockingham County); 1985 North Carolina Young Artist; Outstanding Dissertation Award, Council for Research in Music Education Bulletin, 1991; Greensboro College Distinguished Teaching Award in 1995; and 2008 Moore Professor for teaching excellence and contributions to higher education. She currently serves as Director of Music at First Moravian Church, Greensboro, directing two choirs and a praise band. She is married to Charles McKinney and has one son, Justin McKinney, also a singer.

Joshua currently studies astrodynamics at Virginia Tech University and is an Engineering Mechanics Ph.D. Candidate.
